The whale shark

The whale shark is the biggest fish on the world and grows about 15 m length. In fact, this enormous giant of the sea does not have much in common with whales, with the exception of their size and the fact that they eat tiny plankton, obtained from the waters through their mouth wide open. They normally use to eat at the surface or slightly below it, and make it by filtering on their gills small plankton that is in the water; they are viviparous animals and sometimes the young calves are found swimming with elders. They are also docile and gentile fishes that are not frightened when divers or swimmers come close to them and this is another reason why this activity of the sightings and swimming with them is very popular by our Holbox visitors.

Year over year, whale sharks arrive to the northern corner of the Yucatan Peninsula to feed. And Holbox —because of its proximity to the area where they live during their transient visit— is the perfect platform to watch and enjoy the presence of these magnificent creatures.

This place is also a rich, natural habitat that is home to thousands of species such as the spectacular pink flamingos that come to feed between the months of April and October. Another option for natural life lovers is to watch the incredible spectacle of the turtle nests, and the best place to watch it in awe is Punta Mosquitos. Towards the East, the bottom of the lagoon creates a number of channels and flood lands which safeguard the small populations of manatee and crocodile, exploited without any control for centuries… But if you prefer to enjoy your stay in another way, you also can go fishing or to admire coral reefs, visiting the area of Cabo Catoche or visit the almost inaccessible archaeological site of Yuluk, a few kilometres from Holbox, in land.

The fishing tradition is ancient and assiduous, because since the end of the 18th Century, the inhabitants of the surrounding areas used to extract sponges and capture hawksbill turtles. Nowadays, Holbox is known as a shark fishermen village due to publications and films made here in recent years, but the production of shark has in fact decreased significantly. And different species of shark, often also trapped enormous sea rays with a weight of 1,200 to 2,000 pounds, but they are left in freedom because they are not recoverable; only the small rays can be cooked by the locals, roasted, with chilli, or to fill delicious pasties.

However, the lobster capture with hook, nets and diving, shot in the famous "winter fights" in the peninsular Northeast, which attracts many fishermen by its demand and high commercial value, as well as the capture of molluscs, as octopus and squid.
