These lands were never unpopulated as it has sought to believe; they have always been inhabited by the Mayas and their descendants. The region was part of the Ekab Chieftainship, which stretched from Cabo Catoche (Cay Catoche) to Bahía de la Ascensión (Ascension Bay) and belonged to it the islands of Holbox, Contoy, Isla Blanca, Isla Mujeres, Cancun (that is also an island) and Cozumel.

Close the end of the 19th century, the bigger islands, well protected from the unpredictable and bravo sea received from Yucatán, Bacalar and its surroundings to many survivors fleeing the Maya social rebellion , known as the “Castes War” and later in January of 1891, people conformed the Party of the Islands, with header on Isla Mujeres, included Holbox. In 1880, some Yucatecan entrepreneurs started the colonization of the mainland north and created the East Coast Colonization Company and the Company El Cuyo and annexed. This occupation was conducted between 1880 and 1920 to expand and diversify the agricultural and forestry frontier of Yucatan; therefore, at the early century, there were haciendas and villages as Solferino, Moctezuma, Punta Tunich, Yalahau, Chiquilá, San José, San Fernando, San Ángel, El Ideal and the sugar mill San Eusebio.

The Federal territory of Quintana Roo was created in 1902 and then the continent between Holbox and Isla Mujeres was occupied by operators of gum, palo de tinte (dick dye), salt and precious woods. In 1910 the population of the State was grouped into eight municipalities that for economic reasons were divided into three zones that still persist: North, Centre and south; the North included the municipalities of Holbox, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. At that time, Holbox was the head town of eight locations, but after a few time, in 1921, Isla Mujeres absorbed it.

To mid-20th century, villages were located next to the coasts, but with few exceptions, began to suffer the process of stocking and exploitation of resources. In 1960 structural changes occurred in the settlements and the importance of Holbox decreases, reason why its population reduced to scarce 500 inhabitants during those years. The Decade of the 1970’s is important for Quintana Roo, because in those times its population structure changed, and in 1974, becomes in a Federal State of the Mexican Republic.

Already a State, in 1975, its own politics rearranges: there are intensive growth and four delegations moves to seven municipalities; Isla Mujeres is divided into three and Lázaro Cárdenas is created, with head in Kantunilkin that now includes Holbox. In this municipality, predominantly rural, there are important places, such as Holbox Solferino, Chiquilá, San Ángel, and Nuevo Xcan; it has 264 villages and 93% of their land are Ejido, including the Ejido of Holbox, created in 1938. In the Continental area dominated agriculture and animal husbandry, and the fishing activities in Holbox island. Holbox has today around 1800 inhabitants and has a great potential for tourist development.

The remoteness and isolation that have wrapped to Holbox, demonstrates the value of its inhabitants, who have lived in the limits of civilization and addressed in its history , not only times of shortage, but also the fury of hurricanes and why not?, the influence of human, often negative elements. The last moments of an old operating system specializing in regions of fine wood, gum or copra, already finished. Nowadays there are times to take advantage of the sea and the coast, made by a young dynamic population, who works optimistic for the future.
